Germany has one of the most respected vocational training systems in the world, and it is facing a significant shortage of trainees. In 2025/2026, over 325,000 Ausbildung positions were left unfilled — particularly in skilled trades, nursing, logistics, and gastronomy.
For Indian students and young professionals, Ausbildung offers a direct, legally structured path to work and live in Germany — without requiring a university degree.
Why Ausbildung is a Real Opportunity for Indians
- You earn a salary (typically €700–€1,200/month) while training — no tuition fees
- After completing Ausbildung, you qualify for a work permit and can pursue permanent residence
- The Beschleunigtes Fachkräfteverfahren (fast-track skilled worker visa) makes the process faster
- Indian candidates with APS certificates (from the German Embassy in India) are increasingly well-positioned
- Employers in sectors like nursing, logistics, construction, and gastronomy actively seek international candidates

Eligibility Requirements
To begin an Ausbildung in Germany as an Indian national, you typically need:
- APS Certificate — the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) at the German Embassy in New Delhi verifies your Indian school-leaving certificates. This is mandatory for most visa applications.
- German language proficiency — most Ausbildung programmes require at least B1 level German. Some nursing pathways accept A2 with a commitment to reach B1/B2 during training.
- School-leaving certificate — Indian 10th or 12th standard certificate (the level required depends on the Ausbildung type)
- Training contract (Ausbildungsvertrag) — you must have a signed contract with an employer before applying for the visa
Step-by-Step: From India to Ausbildung in Germany
Get your APS certificate
Apply at the German Embassy in New Delhi. You'll need your 10th and 12th certificates, mark sheets, and other documents. Processing takes 6–10 weeks.
Reach at least German B1 level
Enrol in a Goethe-Institut course or similar recognised provider. B1 is the minimum for most positions; nursing may require B2 by the end of training.
Find an employer and sign an Ausbildungsvertrag
This is the hardest step for candidates outside Germany. AY Advisor works with employers in Berlin and across Germany who are actively hiring international Ausbildung candidates.
Apply for the Ausbildung visa
With your signed contract and APS certificate, apply at the German Embassy in India for a Berufsausbildungsvisum. Processing typically takes 2–4 months via the standard route, or faster via Beschleunigtes Fachkräfteverfahren.
Arrive and register in Germany
Complete your Anmeldung (address registration), open a bank account, and begin your training. Your employer and the Berufsschule will handle the rest.
If You're Already in Germany
If you're already in Germany on a student visa (§16b) and considering switching to Ausbildung, the process is different — and in some ways simpler, since you're already in the country. You would need to find an employer, sign a training contract, and apply to switch your residence permit to a §16a (Ausbildungsaufenthalt) at the LEA.
This is a legitimate and increasingly common path for international students in Germany who decide a vocational career suits them better than a degree.
After Ausbildung: Your Path to Permanent Residence
Completing an Ausbildung opens a direct route to long-term legal residence in Germany:
- After completing training: apply for a work permit in your trained profession (§18a AufenthG)
- After 2 years of employment: eligible for permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis) under the skilled worker route
- After 5 years total: eligible for standard permanent residence
